X Platform's Algorithm Transparency

Tech News 23 days ago 17443 Views

Elon Musk's social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has announced that it will fully open source its latest algorithm. According to Musk, within the next 7 days, the complete code for the algorithm that recommends both organic posts and paid advertisements on X will be made publicly available. Furthermore, this process will be repeated every 4 weeks, and detailed developer notes will be provided to help developers understand any changes made to the algorithm, Musk stated.

Why is this decision important?

The X company has faced intense criticism and legal pressure regarding algorithm transparency over recent times. Specifically, under allegations of violating the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA), EU regulators have accused X of failing to provide sufficient clarity about how its algorithm operates. As a consequence, in 2025, the EU imposed a fine of 120 million euros (approximately 140 million US dollars) on X. Additionally, investigations have been launched concerning algorithmic bias, the spread of illegal content, and restrictions on researchers' access to data. Moreover, in July 2025, judicial authorities in Paris, France, initiated a criminal investigation into X's algorithm operations, further deepening the issue.

The mission by the X social media platform to open source its new algorithm is seen as a significant step toward enhancing user trust and ensuring system transparency. Releasing the latest updates and developer notes every four months will strengthen the link between technological progress and user needs. However, despite these efforts, legal and regulatory challenges against X persist due to EU investigations and fines, fueling broader international discussions about social media regulation.
